When does a house need rewiring?

Wiring doesn’t last forever. If your home still has its original wiring from decades ago, it may not be safe for the way you use power today. Signs it’s time for a check:

  • Old rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cables
  • Round-pin sockets, or brown and black switches
  • No RCD protection on the fuse board
  • Fuses or breakers that trip often
  • Scorch marks, buzzing sockets or a burning smell
  • You’re planning a kitchen, extension or full renovation anyway

Kevin will look at what you have, test it, and tell you straight whether it needs a full rewire, a part rewire or just some upgrades. No pressure, and the quote is free.

Fuse board (consumer unit) upgrades

A modern consumer unit protects every circuit individually, so a fault on one doesn’t knock out the whole house. Upgrades typically include:

  • RCBO protection on each circuit
  • Surge protection
  • Clear labelling of every circuit
  • Testing and certification when it’s done

How a rewire works

We agree the layout with you first: where you want sockets, switches and lights. Then the old wiring comes out and new circuits go in, usually room by room so you can keep living in the house. Once it’s done, everything is tested and you get the certificate for your records.

Common questions

How long does a full rewire take?

It depends on the size of the property and whether it’s empty. Kevin will give you a clear timescale with your quote.

Do I need to move out during a rewire?

Usually not. The work can be done room by room, and power is restored at the end of each day wherever possible.

Can you just replace the fuse board?

Yes, if the wiring is in good condition. It gets tested first, so you know the new board is protecting sound circuits.

Will there be mess?

Rewiring involves lifting floorboards and chasing walls, but we protect floors and furniture and tidy as we go.
